Match Report |
In a match won at the selection table, the Gypsies recalled the halt, the blind and the lame to show the kiddies from Antisocial how it's done.
After routing the opposition for 86 in 32 overs (Damo 5/1/3/7; B1 4/2/2/4; Nathan 7/2/2/19; Chopper 7/0/1/35 and V 9/3/1/10) during which Junior took two vintage catches behind the stumps, the flashing blades of V and Damian rattled up the necessary runs before V went for 62, becoming perhaps the highest scoring Gypsy to pack the kit, as Damian (41*) and Matt were not out at stumps. As Damian was unavailable in week 2, the Gypsies were effectively 2/106 - a lead of 20 runs.
Under grey skies in week 2, Matt and Cheal put the foot down from the start. Unfortunately, Cheal's foot, altho down, was down the wrong line and an expansive drive was snicked to the keeper. Gerber and B1 survived a fiery barrage of donkey drops from the AS-skipper, before putting the rabble away. This delighted the crowd who showed their appreciation in true Gypsy style, prompting one AS fielder to remark that the fielders didn't need to sledge the batsmen, as their own team was doing that (and better than could AS). Matt was out for 23, leaving B1 (39*) and Tap (2* and damaged groin) to take us to 4/180 declared.
Tap was particularly damaging, as, in trying to Mankad him, an AS bowler slipped, did his ankle and was hors de combat and off to the hospital, leaving AS a batsman short. The irony, of course, is that Mankading is no longer possible, so AS paid an unnecessary penalty for youthful exuberance.
The young rabble could muster only 51 as the Gypsies bowled through the drizzle (Chopper 12/4/2/20; Nathan 9/3/3/12; B1 7/1/2/9; Tony 9/6/1/4; Craig (big dog) 3/2/0/2 and Matt 3/1/0/3) helped by catches from Junior (1), Tony (1) and Matt (2).
It was pants down at Bedlam as the Gypsies celebrated their win in traditional style, the moment captured on camera for posterity (a feat for which posterity will never forgive him) by Junior.
Hats off to the selectors who showed boldness and courage in putting this side on the park - despite the potentially huge insurance bill. In the words of the immortal Joe Hockey - there are children born today who will be playing for the Gypsies when they're 150.
The Gypsies are now 1 point clear in 3rd position on the ladder, with a one-day match against the cellar dwellers coming up.
