Gypsies Granny-bound
In a tense match, played in brilliant sunshine at Bedlam Bay, with the paparazzi and the nouveau riche jostling in their boats offshore for the best view, the Gypsies exploded from potential wooden spooners in the final home and away game to defeat the minor premiers, West Wyde Wawwiars, for a spot in the grand final.
On day 1, the Gypsies, surprisingly put in by WWW, batted for 61 overs, to be all out for 138 (Gerber 19, Cheal 23, AB 20 and Kitty 17*). In what proved to be a prescient tactical move, Cohen and Hollywood surrendered their wickets to give the Gypsies the necessary extra overs to bowl out WWW, who, needing only a draw to make the Granny, elected to bat the match out, rather than chase the runs. This proved to be a life-style choice with consequences of Abbott proportions, as the Gypsies didn't have to defend what otherwise might have been a meager total. After 68 overs, WWW were all out for 93, with 12th man, B1, returning his season's best figures of 17/9/4/13 and Damian 13/4/4/30. V 18/8/1/22 and Hollywood 8/6/1/7 completed the route. Will, having dropped his first ball as keeper on day 2, finished with 6 catches. Damien, missing a run-out the ball after not swapping positions with the skip, was fined for lese majeste. With 3 dropped catches, 2 collapses, 2 missed run outs and an opening spell no wicket it was a good day in the score book and at the bank.
Next week, in the Granny, the Gypsies take on Briars, one of whose batsmen famously asked the last time we played them (as they too, batted out for a draw) "when do we play you in the finals?". Since you ask, the only one that matters.
