Match Report |
After a forgettable loss last week, the Gypsies had a point to prove against the 5th placed Anti-social, in a must win game for both teams. A win for the Gypsies would consolidate a finals position; a loss means the final 4 is far from decided.
Under a light drizzle which would persist all day, the Gypsies captain decided to send ASCC in to bat, despite only 6 players being visible. Not that anyone really noticed at the time. V hit the stumps at the end of his first over, something he achieved twice more and the Gypsies would do nine times in the innings.
ASCC were reeling at 2 for 18, but a tidy if slow third wicket partnership of 62 kept them alive. Their best batsman ended up with 72 not out, and the only other score of note being 25, ASCC ended up with a perfectly beatable score of 9 (all out) for 127 (their opening bowler being absent).
The Gypsies got off to a flying start, the first 10 overs yielding 50 runs for no wicket. Too easy, or so thought the captain and Cohen, proclaiming the match in the bag. Brad was out for 29, and Chealy, not wanting to miss out on an early beer and chicken sandwich (courtesy of the blatant date vote grab by Hughsie) quickly joined him. 2 for 52. V continued his unexpected low scores (getting them out of the way before the finals) and was bowled for 1. 3 for 57. No panic though. The captain strides to the crease knowing the game is still "in the bag", and with still plenty of batting to come. Damien "the fox" Walsh with only a few minutes before having to leave to go to work stepped up to the plate and put on a quick fire 18 before holing out in the deep. 4 for 78. And the start of a classic Gypsies collapse. 5 for 79, 6 for 80, 7 for 88, 8 for 90, 9 for 92. Nathan showed that it was all easy after all to finish with an unbeaten 9, the innings was done and dusted at all out for 102. Loss by 25 runs, and once again confirmation that we are indeed, a club in crisis. |
