Match Report
Report on proceedings, Saturdays 19 and 26 October, Latitude:-33.870558, Longitude:151.137543. Gypsy log 285.

The sun was shining on Timbrell park, and the stump holes were their usual 3 feet below the pitch surface, when the Gypsies, with fewer players than could be counted on the fingers of Thomas Covenant's hand, lost the toss, but were invited to bat by the skipper of competition-leading West Wyde Wawwiers. The triple W's opened with a Sri Lankan Spofforth wannabe and a pie-chucker. Rookie Damian took to the fruit with relish, peppering the boundaries like Dhoni in his pomp. As always Cheal offered the bowlers a bitter-sweet mixture of hope and frustration as he, too, went aerial. Jenks chimed in with a stylish blob, and V started as he'd left off last week, but slammed a six back at the bowler, who, too slow to take cover, was forced to catch the ball. The innings of the day came from Hugh, who had volunteered to "pop down for an hour if I'm needed". In a cameo innings, which threatened to scale the heights of James Faulkner’s later that night at Chandigarh, our boy displayed the full compass of his batting skills. This wonderful innings had the spectators thrilled right to the last ball, which, tragically, was also the first, and Hugh trudged off to ring his bank manager to arrange the fine repayments for the top order duck. Then, B1 and Daryl took over with a century partnership bringing the Gypsies in sight of the 200. Batho, who'd also rolled up "for an hour", paced the boundary in pads, with conflicting emotions of wanting to visit the pie shop, but not wanting the Daryl and B1 show to end. AB finally discarded his whites and went home leaving the white line untrammelled. B1 went the first over after tea, deep in avoidance territory on 49. The mists of time rolled back, as Junior Gray strode to the crease and began taunting the triple W's. Following Daryl's departure for his second 50 of the season, debutante Tim Casey and Junior gave the bowlers a 58 run spanking, and the Gypsies passed 200. With 3 overs and 3 balls to go, Hollywood joined Junior. The Gypsies were a batsman short, and with Cheal leaving in AB's wake, had only 8 players at the game. Ever the gentleman, Junior saved the skipper from the agonising decision of whether to bat on next week with Nathan, Warwick, or Metal by lobbing the first ball of the third last over straight to the triple W's biggest gumbie, who, having dropped a sitter earlier in the match, nevertheless pocketed Junior's offering without moving, and the Gypsies left the field with 227, but, there being three overs needed between innings, not required to take the field until next week.

If you've read this far, you're a Gypsies tragic. Read on.

Day 2 Gypsie log 285b

Another beautiful day at Timbrell Park, and, as if scripted in Hollywood, the stump holes have been filled in and the bails are 3 cm higher than last week. A week’s a long time in cricket, and Jenks has put his hand up to field until tea, Damian has been summoned 10 years back in time to Queensland, but has found a replacement, his housemate, Gunn, whilst Metal, the member for Katoomba, has been surrounded by fire. As his life flashes before him, the important things come to mind. Are the Gypsies one of them? Sadly, no. Self and home preservation appears to be front of mind, and Mike pulls out – of course, he’s late with phone call. No wonder we’re a club in crisis. But, in the immortal words of Christina Aguilera, “The roughest roads often lead to the top,” and Suk Hee, Cheal’s mate, puts his hand up. Things get even better for the Gypsies, as Suk Hee and Huge are also late without phone call, adding to the Gypsy coffers. By the second over, the Gypsies are in uncharted territory, with 11 fielders. Just as well, as the Triple W openers seem bent on ending the contest by the third over. The Triple Ws have decided that spite is right, and having got none themselves last week, have declared a no-lbw policy, with V as its first victim. After giving the umpire a spray, V turned the stumps into a memorial to the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, bringing perhaps the comp’s most ill-equipped number 3 to the crease. Fresh paint being applied on the sheds by a couple of council workers on overtime was drying faster than this guy’s scoring. Dropped catches added to the Gypsy kitty, and it took the introduction of Hugh, and a diving catch by our venerable gully, to provide the next breakthrough. A wicket to Cohen and the Gypsies are sitting pretty with 4 in the shed for about 60. But, park cricket wouldn’t be park cricket without the inevitable partnership. This one involved a generously proportioned slogger and his comparatively svelte partner, who put on 120 (including two 13+s from Hollywood), and things are getting tight; 40 to get, 2 sloggers set and 6 wickets in hand. During the carnage, the 3Ws umpire actually states that an lbw appeal was turned down “because you should have given some last week”. This ethically compromised gentleman batted later, played a studied leave to B1 and found his stumps akimbo. He was, of course, told that his umpiring competence was understandable, as he clearly didn’t know where his stumps were. But, back to the cricket, and once again, it’s Nathan to the rescue. Following advice that, with the umpires’ protection, the Falstaffian swatter can stand in front of his stumps, close his eyes and swing, he does just that and skies Nathan to Warwick behind the stumps. Capt B1, with either steely nerve or desperation, keeps Hollywood on, and the other destroyer holes out to Jenks. The Gypsies are in. Catches to Hugh, V, and Nathan, off Hollywood, and a clean bowled to B1, the last 5 add 19 and to the strains of the fat lady, it’s all done and dusted. Gypsies 227, 3Ws 203. Thank your mother for the rabbits.
