Match Report
“Punter’s men break the shackles of defeat” read today’s sports column, same could be said about Gypsies against the Rats, as they beat the Rats to avenge their 09/10 and 10/11 defeats. This was the last game of this decade and Gypsies wanted to finish it in form. To avoid any trouble on or off the field the Gypsies had Past Player Senior Detective Alan Miller flown from Brisbane, who also helped with smooth running of Gypsies traditional Christmas gift, but the trouble makers still managed to defy his authority and cause a little bit of chaos towards the end. Photos will be uploaded to the Gypsies website.

Gypsies lost the toss and were asked to bat first. Chilli and Harry were sent in to give Gypsies the much needed good start, but Harry had other things on his mind, got distracted and was bowled for a duck (expensive distraction during double demerits). Captain decided V Singh could bring some order and at the same provide the good start Gypsies were hoping for. He almost disappointed the captain when he was dropped early in his innings. V took full advantage of this and ensured the Rats paid for the drop. Mr Cheal was looking at his best ever on the crease with his bat. P Cheal and V Singh with usual quick scoring style had the Rats chasing the boundaries, when V was robbed of what was going to be performance of the decade ;) by Hollywood who gave him LBW. With V Singh gone Paul decided to put the paddle to the metal but was unfortunately caught. At this stage Gypsies were 3/70 after 11overs. Captain and R Singh decided they were not going to hold back, and went all out after the bowlers. Rats were in all sorts of trouble with AB and R Singh hitting almost everyone second ball out of the park knowing that the lush green grass on the outfield was not going to help their cause unless they went the aerial route. Just as it seemed that Gypsies were going to score well past 250, R Singh was caught at the boundary (which was a fantastic effort by fielder on deep point). What followed is now classified in Gypsies books as a collapse. With R Singh gone, captain played a lazy shot only to be caught. Next came in the B1, but was caught as he tried to slog the ball over the fence(6/156). While Warwick looked at ease on the crease and was trying everything possible to get Gypsies out of the collapse, but was not getting any help from the batsmen on the other end. Chinmay was hoping to repeat his form from the last match, but was tricked by a slower ball which nicked the thick edge of his wooden log (7/160). Kitty almost chopped the head of the Rat on silly mid on when he tried to smash the trash, but it was his lucky escape as well as the Rat managed to get some hands to it but not enough to make it count. Kitty was soon bowled and now the pressure was mounting back on Gypsies with score being 8/166. With 7 overs to go it was Shane’s time to rise to the occasion and get Gypsies to a defendable score of 200, but that was not going to be the case today. As Shane cleanly hit the ball towards square leg, a series YES NO YES Nos were called to the point where Shane and Warwick almost hugged each other in the middle of pitch, and Warwick finally called No. By this time it was too late for Shane to return to his crease and he was run out for an unfortunate 3. Tony Masters again saved the day and helped Gypsies reach close to their target score of 200. Gypsies were all out for 193 in 34.4 overs. Great effort all round.

B1 was fit for bowling this time and was hungry for some blood. Rats had a disastrous start when B1 bowled their opener on the 3rd ball of his 1st over. Soon Rats lost their 2nd wicket in the 3rd over. And were 2/22 after 10 overs. Pressure was now mounting on the Rats as Gypsies were not giving Rats any easy runs. B1 made another breakthrough in his 6th. R Singh had a wayward start with his bowling as he was unable to control the swing of the ball, but finally got his act together and knocked 2 successive wickets in his 4th over (5/41 18overs). R Singh continued his onslaught knocking another 2 wickets in his 5th and 7th over. With required run rate of well over 10 runs/over, Rats were now in deep shit and almost accepted the fact they were not going to swim out of this one. But Gypsies showed no signs of complacency and kept tightening the screws. Finally Harry and Chilli cleaned the last remaining defences of the Rats and they were all out for 109 after 32.5 overs.

So the Gypsies end the decade on top of the table - with beer in one hand and a sausage in the other. Thanks to Nathan for organizing the drinks and the BBQ, collecting more Date points for it than most who actually played. Given our usual post-christmas form we are truly a club in crisis - How bout em!!!!

Without making any further comments and be done for witchcraft I would close the match report here for this season and the decade.

May I suggest it’s time for the gentlemenc(Hugh) who took responsibility for organizing the ladies day to make the arrangements or be heavily fined for it.
