Match Report |
For the first time in three years, the Gypsies managed to get a game on turf uninterrupted by rain. The wicket looked it's usual low, slow self with a few interesting ridges that interested the bowlers.
Hammo lost the toss and the WW/MP combined XI decided to bat. A reasonable opening partnership was broken by B1 and the official umpire, who raised his finger Rudy Koertzen-style for an LBW. Hammo duly collected a fine at the other end for opening spell no wicket. The opposition batting was solid, if slow as the wicket baked under a warm sun and became easier by the minute. A drinks score of 3/86 was probably not taking full advantage of the pitch and a Gypsies attack that had turned by this stage to B2 for inspiration. He went back to the long run and bowled with incredible speed, finishing one entire over in 57 seconds. His eventual spell of 13-4-1-29 was his career longest, his wicket well-deserved, and the whole spell was over in less tim it takes Cilla to arrive late, go back home and get his shoes and arrive again. Gref, back from a two year posting to Singapore, found the bowling tough, as did Hollywood, who bowled 6 overs for 11, but followed it with 3 overs for 37. It was left to The Huge to rip through the middle order, with Ross taking a fine 2/20, while Kitty's 10th wicket in his 150th match made him the first Gypsy to get the double-treble: 10 runs, 10 wickets, 10 catches, 10 stumpings and of course, 10 drops and 10 ducks.
In the final stages the run-rate did get away from the Gypsies a little, with the WW/MP posting a respectable 9/243 and batting through their 60 overs.
After calling in a special delivery of Oporto's chicken, the Gypsies started disastrously, with B2 bowled from the fourth ball for a duck. But Harrison & Gref took full advantage of a wicket that by now was an absolute road to post an excellent 54 run partnership before Harry (33) copped a shooter to end a delightful knock with some spanking drives through the covers. Gref, as so often happens, followed soon after for a well-compiled 18.
This brought B1 and "Marvellous" Mike Hagley to the crease, and Marv immediately set off in pursuit of Duck's record of 3 tons in a row, after scoring 145 on debut last week. They added a further 82 at 6 runs an over, and pretty much took the attack apart as the WW/MP fielders chased leather to all parts of the ground, including even up into the stands for a rest in one case of extreme softness by an opposition player. The Gypsies have chased alot more leather for far longer on hotter days than this fairy, let me tell you!
B1's dismissal brought Gilshenan to the crease and he was in no mood for running or blocking after 50 overs of keeping. But Hagley's innings was cut short on 75 by a shocking LBW decision that did nothing other than given the WW/MP'ers false hope and annoy Marv no end at being denied what was a seemingly inevitable second ton in a row.
Requiring a run rate of only 3 per over, Gilshenan, Hammo and Kitty easily knocked off the runs as the bowlers flagged, and the only remaining interest was whether Brett would make 50, which he duly did with a 4 to score the winning runs.
A final score of 6/247 may represent the Gypsies' highest ever successful run-chase, and may have sealed a place in the Finals after only two completed rounds and a second win in this crazy combined 3/4 grade. Players retired to the Kurra to sing the song and a week to recover after 2 days of cricket for half the side.
