Match Report
A so-called under-strength Gypsies CC side made a mockery of pre-game predictions by clinically dispatching the Tamils CC by 9 wickets, stretching their unbeaten start to the season to 4 matches.

Played inside the grounds of the Rozelle mental hospital (o.k. Callan Park), where Nathan revealed pre-match that he spent his formative years, the Gypsies put on an impressive display for the in-patients. Having won the toss by default for the second time this season, Gypsies’ captain Hamilton elected to bowl first and the Tamils quickly imploded to be 5/12. Never before had such lusty swinging of the bat yielded such mediocre results, even considering the contribution of the Gyspies’ own Sri Lankan contingent over the years. Chopper and Cohen each did the early damage with 2 wickets, Daryl chipping in with a direct hit run out from mid on.

B1’s taking the field was delayed due to a speeding ticket en route and it wasn’t to be the only fine incurred by a Gypsy for the day. The Gypsies returned to form dropping catches and missing stumpings as the Tamils put on 50 for the 6th wicket. Just as the game seemed to be getting away, the captain pulled a masterstroke by introducing B2 after the drinks break. With simple instructions to bowl on the stumps, B2 set about cleaning up the tail with career best figures of 4/8.

A late pizza delivery meant the Tamils were tardy in restarting play and it was generally plain sailing for the Gypsies thereafter, losing only B1 on the way to victory. Orman top scored with 34 not out and Cohen carried his bat for 14. Fittingly for the venue, there was case of megalomania on display as Tony proceeded to signal 31 wides and no-balls for the Gypsies’ total.

With another pretender cast aside, the Gypsies are now a couple of games clear at the top of the table. One more win in the next month should ensure the Gypsies enter the Christmas break in the familiar position as the competition leaders, but as bitter experience shows, it is form in January and beyond that counts.
